Cupping

Cupping is possibly older than acupuncture, and known to be invented and in use in many parts of the world independently (Africa, Europe, Asia, and the Middle East). It is a modality in which heated glass or bamboo cups are applied to the surface of the body along different meridians and points, as well as regions of body related to pain.  The skin and superficial muscle layer are drawn up into the cup, through a decrease in pressure, stimulating the flow of blood, fluids, and the unblocking of scar tissue.  Cupping has been found to affect the body up to four inches into the tissues, causing tissues to release toxins, activate the lymphatic system, clear colon blockages, help activate and clear the veins, arteries and capillaries, activate the skin, clear stretch marks and improve varicose veins. Cupping is the best deep tissue massage available.  The cupping can be stationary or moving, based on the treatment plan of the practitioner.  The moving cups are facilitated by oils applied to the skin surface before cups are applied.  Cupping feels similar to massage or gua sha, and is like a warm pressure.  Stationary cups are typically left in place for 5 to 10 minutes.  Both moving and stationary cups can leave a red to purple, circular, theraputic marks the same size as the opening of the cup that will typically dissipate after a few days.  It is important to keep the treated areas covered and minimize exposure to cold, wet, or wind.  For example, avoid showers for 24 hrs if possible, and cover immediately after exposing skin, wear sufficient layers when out of doors or sitting under drafts.

Cupping can treat:
Muscular pain (examples: shoulder, back, neck, hip, hamstrings, glutes)
Lung disorders, bronchitis, lymphadema
Gastro-intestinal disease
Paralysis
